Ph.D. (Submitted, on Jan 2009)

Thesis title: Avian diversity along elevational gradient in forest and urban area and their vegetational association in District. Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India.

Summary of doctoral research

The study was an analysis of the avian diversity along elevational gradient in forest and urbanized areas and its vegetational association, in District Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India. For the study surveys was carried out in the district Pauri the central part of Garhwal Himalaya, between 29o20'N - 30o15'N latitude and 78o10'E - 79o20'E longitude. The forest and urbanized habitats of Pauri (high elevation: 1640-2180 m as), Srikot-khanda (mid elevation: 890-1100m asl) and Srinagar (low elevation: 540-840m asl) along elevational zones were taken into the consideration. These areas were surveyed per month to assess bird community structure. The vegetation sampling was done twice in a year. The pooled value was used for the assessment of the avian diversity of the region in the forest and urbanized landscape along elevational gradient. Shannon’s index (H’) was used to describe the bird species diversity (BSD), tree species diversity (TSD), herb species diversity (HSD) and foliage height diversity (FHD), Species richness (SR), Margalef evenness index (E) was also used to estimate the evenness of birds and flora. Rarefaction methodology was also used to describe the bird species richness along elevational gradient in forest and urbanized habitats. The association of the bird community structure with the vegetation profile was also measured for forest and urbanized area along different elevational zones. Different vegetation variables viz. canopy cover, tree height, vegetation density, foliage height diversity were measured to assess its correlation with bird community structure.
